This year's conference will give you the opportunity to meet senior management and hear presentations from some of the world's leading consumer staples, luxury and food retailing companies.
The market is awash with debates in the consumer staples space such as disruptive new entrants; new disruptive distribution channels; digitalisation; and changing consumer communication routes and methods. Key questions for the sector are: is the chase for margin the right strategy?; will a return of inflation support staples·top-line or hinder valuations as bond yields potentially mover higher?; and are we at the end of an M&A supercycle as financing becomes more expensive and the cost of capital rises? Within the context of these debates, we continue to see many compelling fundamental long-term investment opportunities in staples due to their multi year low risk compounding characteristics, underpinned by continued investment in brands and emerging markets. Emerging markets offer very strong volume growth prospects in staples despite some shorter-term challenges; the industry's above average exposure to these regions will remain a key differentiating factor over time.
In Food Retail, debate is likely to focus around online strategies, M&A and private label. We expect retailers to seek to leverage key strengths such as scale, supply chain and distribution, private label expertise and customer insight by seeking new alliances on appropriate terms. We expect 2018 to be another tough year as food retailers face competition from mature market peers and new entrants, playing both the short game and the long game simultaneously.
In Luxury Goods, demand has been accelerating for 18 months and is continuing to gain momentum. Chinese middle class expansion is the key structural driver, however a healthy economic cycle globally is also supportive. Notably performance between companies over the recent past has been increasingly divergent. Company specific strategies on brand, merchandising, marketing, distribution, digital and operation have been key drivers of this differentiation ·what companies say on these topics will hence be a focus for the conference. We continue to see opportunities in what is long term, an attractive sector.
We look forward to welcoming you in Paris.
